Level 7 is the beginning "modified optional" level, which means that certain required elements are prescribed and must be performed to meet specific standards, but the gymnasts may choreograph the rest of the elements and are given their first opportunity to show creativity in their element selection and combinations. The focus of level 7 is NOT on the superior difficulty of those elements chosen but rather on the maximum execution and amplitude of those skills. Artistry and dynamics come into play now on beam and floor. This encourages a more mature development of presentation and personal style through dance elements and movement quality.

Level 8-10 Levels 8-10 are the true optional levels. There are still specific requirements in place, but the gymnasts have a much higher degree of flexibility in their choice of elements. All levels have skill difficulty requirements that must be met, but levels 9 and 10 also have "bonus" skills and connections, which, if not attempted or performed will make it impossible to achieve a perfect score. These optional levels also require a minimum score in order to advance to the next level. Level 8 culminated in a Regional Championship encompassing several states. Level 9 culminated in a East-West Championship and Level 10 is a U.S. wide National event.
